Portraits and Cameos:
Laos, Cambodia and Thailand 2006
Before too many changes had taken place in this region I wanted
to photograph the Minority groups in the north of these countries.
Transportation which at the moment is haphazard,
will in a few years be super smooth,
with the advent of new highways,
paid for by larger neighboring countries
with an eye on timber and coal reserves.
Muang Sing used to be the main opium trading town
of the Golden Triangle. Some of the villages in this area
have only been open to westerners for a few years,
and I discovered that some of the minorities
are still active in poppy cultivation,
causing some displeasure from the government.

The Padaung people are refugees from Burma living in Thailand.
They originated from Mongolia 4500 years ago,
and now live a few miles from the Burmese boarder.
They told me they are waiting for a change of government
so they can return home.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all these people
who happily allowed me to photograph them.
